Comparing Numbers

Comparing Numbers:

In comparison of numbers we will learn to compare 3-digit numbers.

We will use the abacus representation of three digit numbers for comparison.

To learn and understand comparison of numbers the rules are:

Rule 1 :

Count the number of beads in the stick at hundreds position. The stick having more beads is the bigger number, but if the sticks have same number of beads then we will go to Rule 2

For example

Let us compare 645 and 525.The abacus representation of both the numbers are shown below

We see that the stick at hundreds position for the number 646 has 6 beads which is more than the stick at hundreds position for the number 525 which has 5 beads

Hence Number 645 > 525

Now

Now

Let us compare 525 and 531.The abacus representation of both the numbers are shown below

We see that the stick at hundreds position for the number 525 has 5 beads which is equal to the stick at hundreds position for the number 531 which has 5 beads.

In this case we will follow rule 2

Rule 2 :

Count the number of beads in the stick at tens position. The stick having more beads is the bigger number, but if the sticks have same number of beads then we will go to Rule 3

For example

Let us compare 525 and 531.The abacus representation of both the numbers are shown below

We see that the stick at hundreds position for both the number 525 and 531 has 5 beads. So we will compare the beads in the stick at tens place

We see that the stick at tens position for the number 525 has 2 beads which is less than the stick at tens position for the number 531 which has 3 beads

Hence Number 525 < 531
